Nourish your body, support your flow

I always get asked a lot about how to support the lymphatic system at home, and honestly, food plays a big part in that.

You don’t need to live off juices or do any kind of extreme detox. In fact, your body is already doing a good job of detoxing every day, your lymphatic system is working quietly in the background, shifting out toxins, waste and excess fluid. But when it gets a bit sluggish, you can end up feeling heavy, bloated, puffy or just ‘off’.

So, if you want to give your lymph a gentle push, here are some foods that I really rate and are easy to incorporate into your everyday meals.

Leafy greens

Spinach, rocket, watercress, kale… all the green stuff. It’s full of chlorophyll (basically plant magic) which helps your body detox naturally. And it’s good for your skin, digestion and overall energy.

Easy win: chuck a handful of spinach into a smoothie or stir some greens into whatever dinner you’re already making.

Citrus fruits

Lemons, limes, grapefruit - all great for breaking down gunk in the body and keeping your lymph flowing. They also help support your immune system, especially in colder months when we are all prone to getting the dreaded lurgy!

What I do: warm water with lemon in the morning - it sounds boring but it’s actually a nice, calming way to start the day and much better than going straight for a coffee (don’t get me wrong - I love a coffee but sometimes what we love isn’t always what our body needs!)

Berries

Blueberries, raspberries, blackberries - these are packed with antioxidants and help reduce inflammation. Plus they taste good and feel like a treat!

No effort needed: just grab a handful and chuck them on your breakfast or as a snack. I like mine with a bowl full of Greek yogurt and honey, yum.

Healthy fats

Your body needs fats - not the deep-fried kind, but the good ones. Think avocados, olives, nuts, seeds, and oily fish like salmon. These help reduce inflammation and keep everything (including your lymph) moving.

Try: a spoonful of chia seeds in your porridge or a few walnuts in a salad - easy and actually filling. I add mine to my bowl of Greek yogurt and berries in the morning (I’m telling you - it’s a game changer).

Ginger & turmeric

Both of these are naturally anti-inflammatory and great for boosting circulation, which helps your lymph do its job.

If you’re into hot drinks: a bit of fresh ginger in boiling water, maybe with a slice of lemon and honey - really warming and comforting (also great for the colder months).

Cruciferous veg

Bit of a mouthful, but it just means things like broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage and sprouts. These help support your liver, which works alongside the lymphatic system to clear out toxins.

These can be roasted, steamed or stir-fried.

And of course… water

The simplest thing you can do for your lymph is drink more water. Even being slightly dehydrated can slow things right down. Herbal teas like nettle or peppermint are great too.

Top tip: get yourself one of these bottles from Amazon, they come with a straw that makes drinking water feel less of a chore. Thank me later. https://amzn.eu/d/5fY9W5q

A gentle reminder…

You don’t have to overhaul your diet or do anything dramatic. Just adding a few of these into your week can really help your body feel more balanced. Especially if you’re someone who tends to hold on to water or feel sluggish.

If you’ve already had a lymphatic drainage massage with me, these kinds of foods can help keep things flowing and give you longer-lasting results. And if you haven’t tried one yet, it’s honestly such a lovely treatment to reset your system and feel lighter again.

As always,

if you’ve got questions or want help working out what might suit you, just ask. I’m always happy to chat.
